Alumnus and academic physician-journalist Dhruv Khullar MD ’14 and Yale health policy expert Howie Forman, MD, wide-ranging conversation about critical challenges and opportunities in medicine today.

The class of 1973 celebrated their 50th year since graduation, on June 3, 2023 . The class was inducted into the Kushlan Society, a tradition started in 2012 and named after Samuel Kushlan, MD '35, a mentor and role model for generations of physicians who trained at Yale.

Nancy J. Brown, Jean and David W. Wallace Dean of the Yale School of Medicine and C.N.H. Long Professor of Internal Medicine, shares the latest news from YSM and her vision for the future. Her address will be followed by a Q&A, and then the AYAM Annual Meeting. AYAM president, Dr. J. McLeod (Mac) Griffiss ’66, will present the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Service Award and the slate of nominees for open positions on the AYAM Executive Committee.

The Yale School of Medicine's “Innovation in Medical Education” series is a unique chance to meet faculty curriculum leaders and to learn how innovation is enhancing the student experience.

The panel discussion will focus on the simulation curriculum for Yale medical students from their first week of medical school until graduation as well as the role of simulation education during the COVID pandemic. Simulation fellows and Yale medical students join the panel discussion.

Hosted by the Yale School of Medicine, “Innovation in Medical Education” is a series of four virtual discussions centered around meeting faculty curriculum leaders and learning how innovation is enhancing the student experience.

All alumni meeting to hear the latest YSM highlights from Dean Nancy Brown and to vote on the newest AYAM board members, along with the presentation of the 2021 Distinguished Alumni Service Awards.

This presentation will describe the supportive sessions provided to front-line medical and nursing leadership teams during the first wave of COVID in the spring and summer of 2020. A combination of workshops and individual coaching support sessions were offered to help leadership teams with acute challenges presented by the rapid adjustments in care and staffing required by the pandemic. Many lessons learned also apply to hospital care after COVID.

Akiko Iwasaki, Ph.D. shares what her team has done to understand the long COVID disease, its relation to inflammation and the impact of vaccinations.

Experiencing art can be viewed simply as a pleasant pastime. But what if it could also improve observation skills, increase tolerance for uncertainty, forge connection between viewers, address burnout, and even provide a venue to confront systemic bias? Sarah Clever, MD ’96, leads a brief didactic followed by an interactive session that will introduce Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS). VTS is an inquiry-based teaching method, created by a cognitive psychologist and a museum educator, that improves critical (and clinical) thinking skills through teacher-facilitated discussion of visual images.

The Art of Medicine is an observational skills workshop for first year Yale medical students, a requirement since 2002. This workshop, created to enhance and jumpstart the observational skills of medical students to allow them to reach the skills of the diagnostician earlier, stems from the theses of two Yale medical students (Dolev ’01 & Mahony ’05). This workshop has been adopted in part or in whole by more than 100 medical and nursing schools in the United States and abroad.

Yale School of Medicine’s (YSM) Physician Associate (PA) Program Director Alexandria Garino, PhD, PA-C, shared these remarks at the August 27, 2021 White Coat Ceremony for the PA Class of 2023. While the 40 members of the class, speakers, and PA faculty and staff gathered in person, masked, for the ceremony in Mary S. Harkness Auditorium, families, friends, alumni, and donors watched on Zoom because of pandemic restrictions.
