Curriculum

Overview

The curriculum will focus on two areas:

1. Development as a medical educator to include curriculum design, adult learning theory, multiple modalities for teaching, and educational research and scholarship.

2. Development as a leader for emergency medicine residencies and undergraduate medical education in emergency medicine.

Medical Education Training/Opportunities

The curriculum will focus on two areas:

- Education using books on leadership and education with discussion of the reading on a monthly basis.

- Develop an Educational Project that is of the caliber to be presented a CORD, SAEM or ACEP.

- Participate in the Yale Center for Medical Simulation (YCMS) Debriefing Course.

- Participate as a member of the YNHH GME Committee.

- The fellow will develop and implement an educational curriculum for Emergency Medicine Residents or for medical students rotating in Emergency Medicine.

- We will allow the fellow to select a particular track to focus their education geared towards their particular area of interest.

  • Residency Education – they will focus their education project towards residency education, curriculum developments, assessment including the milestones and feedback.
  • Undergraduate Medical Education – they will work directly with the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education and focus their education project towards student education, curriculum development, LCME guidelines and assessment using the entrustable professional activities

Areas for this education will include but not be limited to the following:
  • Adult learning theory and implementation
  • Bedside teaching
  • Large group teaching
  • Small group teaching
  • Teaching using simulation
  • Evaluation
  • Feedback
  • Communication of goals
  • Self-directed learning
  • Working with a challenging learner

Leadership Education/Opportunities

  1. Filling a position as an Assistant Program Director in the Emergency Medicine Residency. They will be the primary APD for 2 residents in each class and perform all reviews/meetings with their residents with the responsible class APD in attendance as an observer in order to give directed feedback.
  2. Monthly meetings with educational leaders to discuss leadership techniques and challenges with their specific areas. This will include review and discussion of assigned readings in articles and books involving leadership.
  3. Attend the Macy Education Leadership Course at Harvard. If it is not available, we will utilize the ACEP Teaching Fellowship as an alternative.
  4. Serve as a Faculty Advisor of the EM Interest Group
  5. Serve as a member of the following committees:
    • Clinical Competency Committee (CCC)
    • Program Evaluation Committee
    • Residency Interviewing and Acceptance Committee
    • Medical Student and Residency Education Committee
  6. Assist the leader of the EM Education/Simulation Area of Concentration
  7. Understand the role of the ACGME and the RRC-EM as the overarching guide for the EM Residency Education

Research Opportunities

The Fellow has the opportunity to initiate their own research project or to collaborate with an ongoing project within the education or leadership areas.

Evaluation Process

Fellows will evaluate the program quarterly.
