Biography
My expertise is in echocardiography specifically, Three-Dimensional Echocardiography and the use of 3D echo in structural heart disease. Three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) is a natural evolution in the development of echocardiography. My interests in 3DE stems back to 1993 when 3D echocardiography involved multiple imaging planes to generate a 3D image. I have been involved in the development of testing new 3D technology. As new developments in probe technology brought a true “real-time” 3D fully-sampled matrix array transthoracic and transesophageal transducer it has become the main imaging modality in valvular disease and the assessment of left and right ventricular function. I have also focused my interests in integrating 3D in routine clinical practice and how to improve utilization of this technology for valvular heart disease as well as ventricular function. Within the last 10 years, I have also focused my interest in building a High Quality Echolab that utilizes advanced echo techniques (Contrast echo, Strain imaging and 3D echocardiography). Understanding how to improve and maintain excellent echo quality though Yale New Haven Health Systems across all Echolabs is also an important mission.

Research
Overview
With current three-dimensional echocardiography methods, we have been able to apply this to our daily clinical routine. Nevertheless, the penetration of this technology to general clinical practice is still low. I'm driven to understand how to improve the adoption of this amazing technology, apply automative software to our clinical workflow to improve accuracy and efficiency. With new software in 3D echo, evaluation of valve disease is enhanced, estimating valve size is accurate and 3D printing using echo is our future. In addition to my clinical research that is highly focused on 3DE, I've expanded my interest to the use of echocardiography in general to hence our clinical cardiology practice. Focused echo using portable ultrasound or hand-held ultrasound units is another field that I've expanded my research interests particularly in the ICU setting and screening for rheumatic heart disease in developing countries.
The Yale Echo Corelab under YCRG is a very active Echo core lab that partners with industry sponsors to aid in developing research protocols and data analysis of echo studies in a rigorous method with high integrity. I've been involved in multiple structural heart disease devices as well as stem cell therapy or device therapy for heart failure.
