Health Equity Research Methods Bootcamp
The Health Equity Research Methods Bootcamp is an annual workshop for researchers, clinicians, program managers, health scientists, and students at Yale to learn about methods for and areas within community-partnered health equity research. The bootcamp is designed to provide an opportunity for individuals interested in developing a health equity research portfolio to explore methodological and technical advances in research and participate in interactive workshops on topics related to health equity. Participants have the opportunity to network and develop potential collaborations at this event.
October 2022: Community Based Participatory Research Methods Bootcamp
The theme for the 2022 bootcamp was Community Based Participatory Research. The event was kicked off with remarks from the Executive Director of the Office of Health Equity Research, Daniel Sarpong. Next, there was a panel discussion involving current projects using principles of participatory research moderated by Lindsey Greene-Upshaw. Panelists included: Giselle Carlotta-McDonald, Jamila T. Davis, Kristen Nwanyanwu, Ijeoma Opara, Cristina Barnes-Lee, and Angelo Pinto. Following the panel discussion, a community leader, Natasha Ray and academic researcher, Karen Wang co-led an interactive lecture on community-academic partnerships. Finally, Brita Roy and Sakinah Suttiratana facilitated a workshop where participants were able to discuss and troubleshoot current topics in engaging community stakeholders in research.
October 2023: Methods and Measurement Bootcamp
The theme for the 2023 bootcamp was Method and Measurement.
The morning sessions consisted of four presentations:
- The first presentation by Carol Oladele was on Measurement of race and ethnicity in research.

During the afternoon session, bootcamp participants engaged in robust discussions with Drs. Oladele, Wang, and Lewis. They were able to walk through an example scenario together, ask further questions, and consider methods and measurement in their own research.
November 2024: Dissemination of Research Findings Bootcamp
The theme for the 2024 bootcamp was Dissemination of Research Findings. The morning kicked off with an address titled “Moving from Equitable Research to Dissemination: Frameworks, Values and Processes to Facilitate Successful Community-engaged Research Scholarship” from our keynote speaker, Tabia Henry Akintobi, PhD, MPH who is a Professor and Chair of Community Health and Preventive Medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine. She is also the Principal Investigator of the Prevention Research Center, Associate Dean of Community Engagement, and Director of Evaluation and Institutional Assessment. Next, OHER team member Jose DeJesus moderated an inspiring panel discussion on the art of disseminating research findings to lay communities. The three panelists included: Alycia Santilli, MSW who is Senior Director of Community Initiatives at the Southern Connecticut State University College of Health and Human Services; James Rawlins Jr., MBA, DBA who is a Data Scientist, Community Researcher, and member of the Yale Cancer Center Community Advisory Board; and Reverend Leroy O. Perry MDiv, DMin who is Pastor of St. Stephens AME Zion Church and has led the Yale Cultural Ambassadors program for over 12 years. Beginning the afternoon session, Jackson Higginbottom, MPH led a workshop on Strategic Audience Segmentation and Message Tailoring with Generative AI: Enhancing the Dissemination of Health Equity Research. Jackson is a public health practitioner working at the intersection of health communications, program evaluation, and community engagement. Finally, Sean McCabe, who is a Communication Officer in charge of Social Media and Audience Development at Yale School of Medicine, led a workshop titled Promoting Your Work on Social Media… & Beyond.
