Translation is a highly regulated step in eukaryotic gene expression. My work aims to uncover how differences in mRNA primary sequences lead to large and regulated differences in their translation during normal development and in disease. I'm interested in rigorously investigating the effects of 5′-UTR structure on translation initiation in eukaryotes, and the mechanisms of regulating translation initiation by 5'-UTR structures through responding to conserved helicases.
