Regional Medical Director (RMD)

Reporting to the Chief Ambulatory Physician Executive, the Regional Medical Director (RMD) is a critical leadership role within our complex academic health system. The RMD is responsible for overseeing clinical operations, ensuring high-quality patient care, and implementing strategic initiatives across all ambulatory practices within their region of the Aligned Clinician Enterprise (ACE), including Yale Medicine, Northeast Medical Group (NEMG), and the hospital’s provider-based locations. This position requires a dynamic leader with extensive clinical experience, strong management skills, and a commitment to clinical excellence. Key Responsibilities will include:

Clinical Leadership:

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to medical staff within the region.
  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based patient care.
  • Oversee the implementation of clinical protocols and guidelines.

Operational Management:

  • Collaborate with administrative leaders to optimize clinical operations, including Access
  • Monitor and improve clinical performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with the administrative operational dyad partner to ensure clinical appropriateness of budgets, staffing, and resources.
  • Lead clinical operations across all ambulatory practices within the designated region of the ACE.

Quality and Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
  • Collaborate with Quality leadership to support quality improvement initiatives and patient safety programs.
  • Conduct regular reviews and audits of clinical practices.

Academic and Research Integration:

  • Foster a culture of academic excellence and support faculty and clinician development.
  • Promote an environment supportive of clinical research activities within the region.
  • Collaborate with academic leaders to integrate research and education into clinical practice.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Represent the health system in regional forums.
  • Engage with community leaders to address regional health needs.

Dyad Partnership:

  • Work closely with an administrative dyad partner to co-lead and manage clinical operations, leveraging the clinical expertise of the RMD and the administrative acumen of the executive to ensure effective decision-making.
  • Enhance operational efficiency and improve patient care outcomes through collaborative efforts.
  • Align clinical and administrative goals to foster a cohesive working environment.
  • Address challenges from both clinical and business perspectives for holistic solutions.

Promoting Mission and Values:

  • Champion the mission and values of the organization throughout all clinical and administrative activities.
  • Foster a culture of enthusiasm, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure that all actions and decisions reflect the core values of the health system.

Physician Wellness:

  • Advocate for and support the wellness and professional development of physicians in the region.
  • Develop and implement programs that promote work-life balance and prevent burnout.
  • Serve as a key touchpoint and resource for physicians, providing guidance, support, and mentorship.

  • YSM, YNHHS, Yale Medicine, NEMG, ACE, and CIN leadership
  • Chief Physician Executive
  • Chief Ambulatory Physician Executive (CAPE)
  • Yale Medicine (YM) and Northeast Medical Group (NEMG) CMOs
  • Operational and finance leadership

  • Nursing leadership

Qualifications:

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) and board certification in a relevant specialty.
  • Current, unrestricted medical license.
  • Minimum of 10 years of clinical experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong track record of clinical excellence and administrative leadership.
  • Experience in an academic health system or complex healthcare environment.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively across disciplines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in healthcare administration, public health, or a related field.
  • Experience with clinical research and academic teaching.
  • Proven ability to implement quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Familiarity with healthcare regulatory requirements and accreditation processes.

Work Environment:

  • Travel to on-site duties at clinical locations throughout the designated region.
  • This is a 0.4 FTE position
